Preparation for the Workforce

As I finish up my third month as an intern at DSG, I feel compelled to reflect on my personal development and the future ahead. I’m grateful for the opportunity to work with industry professionals (my DSG mentors) who have helped me to develop new skills, guide me to discover where my interests lie, and assist to prepare me for the workforce. I would like to use this entry to describe the different steps DSG has taken to both educate me and prepare me to enter the workforce.

Not only am I more than halfway through my internship at DSG, but I am also more than halfway through my last semester as a college senior. Before I know it, I’ll be entering the workforce and  embarking on my career. Throughout this internship,  I have already been exposed to the real world and agency life in many ways. This internship has given me the opportunity to work with many different departments and teams within the organization  and each has provided its own unique learning opportunity.

In Office Days

Every day that I walk into the DSG office it is an opportunity for me to learn something new. “In office” days are personally my favorite! Regardless of how busy my schedule is, there is always something new to learn – and I’m always encouraged to learn about a new project, sit in on different meetings and offer ideas.  The in office dynamic between coworkers is always productive, and very welcoming. I’m surrounded by people who not only want to see their interns succeed, but are also there to help us succeed. The DSG environment has certainly helped me to feel prepared and confident in myself and the work I am doing.

Learning How Software Drives Agency Efficiency

I have to admit, prior to my DSG internship, my software knowledge did not go much beyond Microsoft Office and the basic Google Docs platform.

In the last 3 months, my primary role has been content creation and social media postings, so I truly didn’t think additional software would be required . However, the extensive use and integration of multiple software platforms has probably been the biggest surprise of my internship. Essentially, software is deployed in every aspect of agency operations from inputting the original client request to task assignment and tracking, to campaign execution to billing.   I have been fortunate  to receive training on and first hand exposure to Sharpspring, Yext, Tapclicks and numerous other software used for posting content and reporting results.

It is impressive how intuitive these programs are for users and how they make the agency so much more efficient. Now that I have received training and worked within these platforms, I am confident in my ability to use each one. Overall I have been able to explore  many different disciplines through this internship and am confident that there is always more to learn!
