I am honored to be writing for DSG’s Intern Notebook Blog this week. Although I am still getting the hang of things here, there is already quite a bit to share.
Brief Introduction To Jack
My name is Jack Marinello and I am a senior Media and Culture major at West Chester University. I will be graduating this coming May and cannot wait to see what my future holds. I also host a radio show called The Jackie M Show on Mondays for the University’s radio station. The two hour show is devoted to sports talk, music and some fun segments to switch things up.
After this internship, I will have some experience in digital marketing. At DSG, there are so many different opportunities that will help me grow and prepare for the future. As graduation quickly approaches, I know I will be more and more ready for what is in store ahead.
This is Only The Beginning
Yes, I have only been here for a few weeks, but I am excited to see how my skills and knowledge evolve from now until the end of the internship. Judging by my time here so far, I certainly expect to learn a lot.
During my interview process here at DSG, I remember asking Paige, “is this an internship where I can learn along the way or do I need specific experience?” Thinking to myself, I do not know that much about digital marketing, google ads, SEO, etc. Thankfully, the answer was ‘yes’. As my weeks continue here, I can tell you that there is plenty to learn. This is my first internship and I did not know what to expect at all. I was just happy to get my foot in the door of the media world.
The first few weeks are overwhelming no matter where you work. For me, this was no exception, I was overwhelmed. I have the opportunity to sit in on meetings throughout my day and so many things are said that leave me scratching my head. In particular, it feels like a constant stream of acronyms are used on every call.
Fortunately, as days go on, I am picking up the language of the marketing world. Each day, I get more and more familiar. As Gabby said last week, I kind of expected to be getting coffee for my managers and helping on little tasks here and there, but that is certainly not the case. I have been assigned to the Search Engine Marketing team. Sorry, that is “SEM” to you. It is nice to feel part of a team and not just a stereotypical intern.
I have had the opportunity to learn about “Google Ads” and how keywords work. I knew there was paid advertising on search engines, but never knew what went into it. I honestly could not have told you that there were companies out there that did this for others. Luckily, a course I took in school was called “Media Audiences” and they touched on the impressions, engagements, the amount of clicks on posts and such so I was not completely lost in this regard.
Another thing that I remember from my interview process was being told that my daily schedule was never going to be the same. One day, I could be helping a campaign launch, but another could be helping with social media. This has certainly held true and I have been exposed to multiple different aspects of a marketing agency. I have been invited to join client and vendor meetings. I have also participated in web based training for multiple platforms.
Everyone here is so polite and caring which calmed the nerves down early. They understand that I might be lost and recognize that I am here to learn. I have been on calls where they will stop to make sure I am not confused. This is a real tribute to the culture at DSG. They care about the interns, want to hear from us and make sure we are learning and engaged.
Where I Hope to Go
Like I said, I am only a few weeks in so there is so much more to learn. I hope to grow in the marketing world. There are going to be many opportunities for me going forward and I am excited for every single one that comes my way.
The latest project is creating a brand new podcast for the company. DSG thinks my experience on the radio can help make an impact on the social media for the company and so do I.
In four weeks when you hear from me again, I expect to be throwing acronyms at you, talk about the success of the podcast and to tell you more about what I have learned. This is only the beginning. It is only going to get better from here.
